6 DID YOU KNOW? Feast of the Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary Although Mary was born naturally to Joachim and Anna, she is considered morally pure and immaculate. It is for this reason that the church celebrates not only her birth, but also her conception, which the Armenian and the Greek Orthodox churches observe on December 9, and the Roman Catholic Church celebrates on December 8. Feast of the Nativity of the Holy Mother-of-God The birth of St. Mary is celebrated by all traditional churches on September 8. Mary's birth is not recorded in the Gospel, but in all likelihood, she was born in Bethlehem or Nazareth, some 20 years before Christ's nativity. Presentation of the Holy Mother-of-God to the Temple The Feast of the Presentation of the Holy Mother-of-God to the Temple is celebrated by all the traditional churches on November 21. According to custom, devout Jewish parents presented their children to the temple at a young age. Mary's parents, Joachim and Anna, brought their young daughter to the Temple in Jerusalem to consecrate her to God. According to tradition, Mary remained there for a time and was given over to the care of pious widows and maidens who lived at the temple. After seven years, Mary became betrothed to Joseph the carpenter. The Annunciation The Annunciation commemorates the tidings which the Angel Gabriel brought to Mary. It is part of the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy and plan, and the most important event in Mary's life. The Annunciation is observed in the Armenian Church on April 7. "Do not be afraid, Mary," the Angel Gabriel said, as he appeared before the young woman, "for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the House of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." 7 The Blessing of Grapes Khaghogh Orhnek On the day of the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother-of-God, the blessing of grapes takes place immediately after the Divine Liturgy. The ceremony is rich in symbolism and emphasizes the important role the Virgin Mary assumed in the revelation of God. The custom of blessing grapes, the first fruits of the harvest, can be traced back to Old Testament times, when farming was a common vocation. Of the vast variety of produce, grapes had a special place of honor and were considered the "first fruits" because they were the first produce of harvest. Among the Israelites, as among many neighboring cultures, grapes were regarded as belonging in a special way to God since they were the first fruits. It was He who gave the gift of the whole harvest and to offer Him the first fruits was to acknowledge complete dependence on Him. Special services of thanksgiving were conducted by priests in the temple, a tradition that prevailed to the time of Christ. With the birth of Jesus, these dedications took on a new meaning. Jesus Christ was the first born or the first fruit of Mary and, as such, was offered to God in the temple. (Luke 2:25-30) Armenian Church doctrine teaches that Mary has a primary place of honor because it was of her and by the Holy Spirit that God became incarnate (took human flesh). She is seen as the image of humanity fully obedient to God and ultimately sanctified by doing God's will. Therefore, on the feast remembering her Dormition (falling asleep in Christ) and Assumption (ascending to heaven), we celebrate the blessing of grapes. Christ gave His blood to us for eternal life, and in remembrance we bless the grapes, the fruits of the earth. It is traditional to use seedless grapes to emphasize that this fruit came into being without seed, just as Christ became man without any human agent.

The program will begin at 10:00 am with a tour of the sanctuary conducted by Father Garabed. A musical portion will be performed by Deacon Rubik with organ accompaniment by Margaret Lafian. At 11:00 am, the group will proceed to the Alex and Marie Manoogian Museum where director Lucy Ardash and her docents will provide a tour of the museum and its precious artifacts, some dating back thousands of years.
